Program Description

This program is designed for students planning to attend graduate school to earn M.S. or Ph.D. degree and/or seek a position in industry or government as a computer hardware designer/architect.

Student Opportunities and Experience

The Mathematics and Computer Science Department provides mentoring to undergraduate students and facilitates presentations to provide undergraduates with opportunities to gain information on research experiences, internships, and exploring the graduate experience. The department is a member of the National Center for Women and Information Technology (N.C.W.I.T.) Academic Alliance whose focus is on diversity, particularly for women and girls, is charged with bringing about institutional change in computing.

Students work with outreach initiatives to improve computer science education at all levels. One of these initiatives is the S.T.A.R.S. (Students & Technology in Academia, Research & Service) Alliance regional partnerships among academia, industry, K-12, and the community to strengthen local programs by focusing on K-12 outreach, community service, student leadership, and computing diversity research.

Students work with many programs focused on increasing the computing pipeline by getting students interested in S.T.E.M. disciplines and future technology careers. These programs include The Association of Computing Machinery (A.C.M.) and the National Society of Black Engineers (N.S.B.E.). Our students conduct outreach activities to include the local elementary, middle, and high school in a concerted effort to broaden participation in computing for underrepresented minorities and girls. These workshops include teaching boys and girls from K-12 how to write programs, develop websites, and program robots.

About the School

The world needs visionaries. Those who are able to imagine what’s possible and chart a course to get there.

More than 150 years ago, Claflin broke down barriers in higher education, making it the first South Carolina university open to all regardless of race. Today, Claflin continues to welcome exemplary students of all races and genders who demonstrate a passion to change not only their own circumstances but to change the world as well.

We believe that most leaders are made, not born. Furthermore, we believe that students with passion, integrity, and a willingness to work hard have an innate capacity to become visionary leaders. As a Claflin student, you are challenged to realize your full potential, leaving here with an unparalleled education that will serve you well in graduate school, in a career – and in life.
