Program Description

The Ph.D. in Journalism Studies offered by the Department of Journalism is one of three separate and distinct tracks of the Media Research and Practice doctoral program within the College of Media, Communication, and Information.

The Ph.D. in Journalism Studies focuses on exploring the intersection of journalism, journalism practice, and society. Students gain a solid foundation through coursework that explores the theories and methods that shape mass communication research. The multidisciplinary program examines traditional journalism and the ever-increasing boundaries of the industry, including user-generated content, citizen journalism, the audience’s impact on news production, the new technologies shaping practice, social media’s role in news, new quasi-journalistic outlets, etc.

About the School

The College of Media, Communication, and Information (CMCI) prepares students to be leaders in our ever-changing information society. Our students and faculty think across boundaries, innovate around emerging problems and create a culture that transcends convention.

The College of Media, Communication, and Information opened in fall 2015. It was created to match the times we live in—times of revolutionary change in the way people communicate, the tools they use to do it, and the impact that change has on society. CMCI students, by definition, embrace this new world. Our faculty members prepare them to thrive in it.
