The Master of Science in Epidemiology degree is a 36-credit program that prepares students for careers in the public health arena that are focused on the surveillance and prevention of illnesses among diverse populations around the world. Students will be trained in the foundational aspects of epidemiology including person, place and time, risk and protective factors, and the social determinants of health. Areas of focus may include chronic disease, infectious disease, geriatric, environmental, psychiatric, social, cancer, and maternal and child health epidemiology. The thesis is required to demonstrate skill in independent inquiry and investigation, under the tutelage of a mentor.
The college offers a diverse variety of degree programs — two bachelor’s, seven master’s, eight Ph.D., and three professional degrees, as well as several certificate programs. By combining the population perspective of public health with the patient focus of our health professions disciplines, the continuum of care is covered, from prevention and treatment to rehabilitation that supports the health and well-being of communities and individuals.
Faculty members publish their findings in high-impact journals, such as The New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet, JAMA, Science, and the Journal of Clinical Oncology. In support of the university’s artificial intelligence initiative, the college has hired several new faculty members with expertise in AI. Current PHHP research projects using AI technology include developing precision doses for a nonpharmaceutical treatment for brain health, real-time surveillance of antimicrobial resistance, predicting the effectiveness of new cancer nanomedicines, and forecasting hotspots of infectious disease transmission. College researchers are also conducting a number of ongoing studies related to COVID-19, such as disease modeling, long-term health effects among patients with COVID, and coronavirus transmission between humans and animals.
