Otterbein students outpace state and national rates for passing national certification exams every year. In 2019 pass rates were > 95% for first-time test-takers in both the FNP and NA majors. Our redesigned student-friendly, flexible curriculum allows working adults to find a healthy work/life balance necessary to succeed in a graduate program. Please note, the NA program continues to require full-time study. What makes our program exceptional is how well our graduates do when they leave our program. The Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) programs build upon the student’s baccalaureate nursing education and professional experience. The Master of Science in Nursing program is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The College of Nursing also offers admission to its master’s degree programs in nursing to Registered Nurses who have completed an AS in Nursing or diploma nursing program and have bachelor’s degrees in fields other than nursing. These students will need to take 9 credits of undergraduate upper-division coursework as the prerequisite for graduate study in nursing. The goal of the Master of Science in Nursing program is to prepare advanced practice nurses, nurse educators, and nursing leaders and managers to assume leadership positions in a variety of healthcare settings. Graduates of these programs are eligible to sit for national certification examinations in their respective specialties.

Tusculum University School of Nursing currently offers the MSN concentration area of Family Nurse Practitioner. The Tusculum University MSN program provides students with the opportunity to provide advanced practice nursing care in a variety of practice settings. The MSN program has experienced faculty who provide mentorship and support to students. The emphasis of the program is on the use of evidence-based knowledge and skills to lead the healthcare team, encourage health promotion, diagnose and treat acute and chronic illness, and evaluate the plan of care. Critical thinking and decision-making skills are also emphasized. Upon completion of the program, the graduate is prepared to enter doctoral-level education in nursing.

The Master of Science in Nursing-Nursing Education track prepares the graduate to apply principles of education in the role of educator in various patient care settings and in institutions of higher education through completion of a 36-semester credit hour curriculum. The course instruction is delivered primarily online allowing students to balance career, family, and other responsibilities while advancing their education. Admitted students will be asked to travel to the Bryan-College Station campus for a one-day New Student Conference prior to the start of the program and a limited number of class activities. Advanced Health Assessment requires students to complete a total of 45 hours on the Bryan-College Station campus to meet the clinical objectives of the course as set forth by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing for any MSN degree. Students will complete the clinical hours in two separate on-campus visits requiring overnight stays for students at a distance. Students will be responsible for obtaining their own preceptors for two courses taken in the later semesters. Further information on preceptors will be provided at orientation.
